Frequently Asked Questions
Which fuel pressure tester do I need?
The appropriate fuel pressure tester depends on the fuel type, injection system, and expected pressure range. Analog testers with various adapters are available for conventional gasoline injection systems and low-pressure applications. In contrast, modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) systems operate at significantly higher pressures and require testers designed for high-pressure applications. Common-rail diesel systems require specialized high-pressure testers designed for the high system pressures of these injection systems.
What is the difference between low-pressure and high-pressure testing in the fuel system?
The low-pressure test is primarily used to check the fuel supply pressure between the tank, fuel pump, and injection system. This allows, for example, the fuel pump, pressure regulator, and the tightness of the low-pressure system to be checked. In gasoline direct injection and common-rail diesel systems, a high-pressure circuit is additionally used. For its testing, high-pressure test equipment specially designed for this purpose is required.A low-pressure test device must therefore not be used for measurements in the high-pressure circuit.
Which fuel testing devices are suitable for gasoline and which for diesel engines?
For gasoline engines, fuel pressure testers for conventional injection systems, as well as special high-pressure testers for gasoline direct injection, are available, among others. For diesel engines, depending on the injection system, common rail high-pressure testers, return flow testers, and injector testing devices are used, for example. Some testers can be used for both gasoline and diesel applications. The deciding factors are always the injection system, the required measuring range, and the connections suitable for the engine.
Which adapter is compatible with my fuel system?
The required adapter depends on the vehicle manufacturer, fuel injection system, and respective test connection. Autotestgeräte Leitenberger offers various individual adapters as well as fuel pressure test cases with extensive adapter sets. For workshops with a wide vehicle portfolio, a test case with multiple adapters may be a sensible choice. If only certain vehicles or fuel injection systems need to be tested, a smaller set or a single adapter may suffice. Therefore, the vehicle, engine or fuel injection system, and the existing test equipment should be taken into account before ordering.
How can common-rail injectors be tested?
Different testing methods are available for common-rail injectors. A return flow tester can compare the return flow of several injectors simultaneously. Significant differences may indicate a faulty injector.Specialized nozzle and injector testers are available for further testing. Depending on the device, for example, opening pressure, spray pattern, and tightness can be checked.Which method is required depends on the injector type and the specific diagnostic task.
How can it be determined which fuel is in the vehicle?
Specialized fuel identification devices can be used to check the type of fuel or detect any potential contamination.Depending on the device, diesel and biodiesel can be distinguished, or gasoline admixtures in diesel fuel can be detected, for example. This can be particularly useful before further diagnostic work if incorrect fueling or fuel contamination is suspected as a possible cause of damage. The testing method used and its reliability depend on the specific device model.
How can a diesel fuel system be bled after repair work?
After working on the fuel system, for example after replacing components or lines, air may be present in the system. Special pumps are available for bleeding, which can pump fuel through the low-pressure system and remove any air.Especially in commercial vehicles, an electric bleeding pump can make filling and bleeding the fuel system easier. In doing so, the prescribed bleeding procedures and specifications of the vehicle or engine manufacturer must be observed.
How do I find the right spare part for my Leitenberger device?
The most reliable way to identify a spare part is by using the exact model designation and the article number of the existing testing or service device. Many spare parts are already listed in the shop with the Leitenberger devices they are compatible with. If the compatibility is not clear, we recommend checking the device or article number against the desired spare part before placing your order.
Where can I find my device's article number?
Depending on the device, you can find the item number on the nameplate or device label, in the user manual, or in the original order documents. The item number is also provided on the product pages in the Leitenberger shop. This number often makes it possible to clearly identify which spare part or accessory is suitable for the device you have.
